The Park Forest Commission on Human Relations, in collaboration with Freedom Hall, today announced the kickoff of Black History Month with a panel discussion scheduled for Feb. 1. This free event will explore a variety of important topics aimed at educating the community about historical events and figures while fostering dialogue about the changes and progress needed for the future.

The panel will feature a lineup of speakers, including Park Forest's first Black mayor, Ron Bean, who will share his insights and experiences. Additionally, attendees will have the opportunity to hear from the owners of Illinois' first Black-owned winery, who will discuss their journey in the wine industry and the significance of representation within it. The diverse group of panelists will contribute to a conversation, showcasing a variety of perspectives from different backgrounds and experiences.

Community Relations Manager Evelyn Randle emphasized the importance of this event, stating, "To understand the present, you must know the history of how things got to where they are."

Randle further explained that the discussion will feature many individuals who have achieved 'firsts' in their respective fields, recounting the trials and tribulations they have faced. They will also share their insights and suggestions on how to address current challenges to pave the way for a brighter future.

The panel discussion will start at 1 p.m. at Freedom Hall, the Village's performing arts venue, located at 410 Lakewood Boulevard. In addition to the pivotal discussions, Randle highlighted that attendees will also have the opportunity to participate in a free book giveaway, promoting literacy and encouraging community members to engage with literature that reflects the experiences and contributions of Black throughout history.
