[ARCHIVED] Park Forest officials warn most fireworks are illegal, violators could face $750 fine

The Park Forest Police Department reminds residents that fireworks are illegal and violators can face up to a $750 fine.

Signs posted throughout the Village remind people not to use fireworks, as doing so may result in a ticket. Park Forest Police Chief Brian Ryzski emphasized that the intention is not to prevent people from celebrating but to ensure the safety of all.

"We want everyone to have a fun and safe 4th of July," Ryzski said. "At the same time, fireworks are illegal not just in the Village of Park Forest but the state of Illinois."

Ryzski said residents can leave the fireworks to professionals and watch the fireworks show at Central Park on Thursday at dusk. He said the event will follow the Main Street Nights concert series and the Public Safety Independence Day parade.

"Consumer Fireworks," such as handheld fireworks, bottle rockets, and Roman candles, are illegal to sell, possess, or use in Illinois. Violators may be subject to a maximum penalty of one year in prison and a fine of $2,500. Additionally, buying fireworks in Indiana, Wisconsin, or a neighboring state and bringing them into Illinois is illegal.

Deputy Fire Chief Mark Cotrano echoed Ryzski and said fireworks aren't safe.

"Last year, nationwide, there were eight deaths and over 9,700 injuries because of fireworks," Cotrano said. "Even something that may appear harmless, like a sparkler, can burn at temperatures ranging from 1,200–3,000°F — which is hot enough to melt some metals."

Cotrano added residents shouldn’t hesitate to dial 911 if there’s an emergency.

Weather permitting, Park Forest is set to hold a fireworks display at Central Park at 9:15 p.m.
