[ARCHIVED] Distracted Driving Awareness Month: Park Forest police urge caution

As more drivers take to the road during the spring and summer months, the Park Forest Police Department is urging all motorists to remain vigilant and focused while behind the wheel.

April is designated as Distracted Driving Awareness Month—a crucial time to bring attention to the alarming number of lives lost in accidents associated with distracted driving. According to data from the Illinois State Police, a total of 82 individuals were killed in fatal accidents across the state in 2024 due to distractions, which represents approximately 6.63% of all fatal crashes recorded in Illinois.

Deputy Chief Kristopher Vallow of Park Forest emphasized that law enforcement is actively cracking down on distracted driving. Under current Illinois law, it is strictly illegal for drivers to hold a cell phone in their hand while operating a vehicle in Park Forest, and violations of this law are classified as moving violations, which can lead to fines and penalties.

"Simply put, keep your eyes on the road and drive," Vallow stated. "Using a cell phone while driving introduces significant dangers that can result in fatal accidents and life-changing injuries. We are intensifying our enforcement efforts to ensure the safety of everyone in the Village."

Vallow elaborated on the dangers of distracted driving, noting that it hinders a driver’s ability to concentrate on the road and react appropriately to changing traffic conditions. This impairment increases the risk of accidents and injuries dramatically. He pointed out that distraction is not limited to phone usage; other common activities—such as eating, adjusting the radio, or engaging in conversations with passengers—can also divert attention from the driving task and elevate the chances of a crash.

The Park Forest Police Department encourages all drivers to adopt safe driving habits and to remain mindful of their surroundings to protect themselves and others on the road.
