The Park Forest Department of Recreation, Parks, and Community Health is launching its "Monthly Health Discussion" event this January.

Each month, the department will host a free forum at Park Forest Village Hall that addresses various health topics. This month, the discussion will focus on strategies for achieving and maintaining a healthy weight. Assistant Director Margaret Lewis stated that the program is free and serves as another way for the Village to engage with its residents.

"Oftentimes people want to have a healthier and better quality of life but need a support system to do so," Lewis said. "In this program, residents can learn from experts and network with fellow residents trying to achieve similar goals."

Lewis mentioned that the first program will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 21, at 10 a.m. The session will delve into various strategies for maintaining a healthy weight, emphasizing the importance of proper nutrition. Participants will learn about the key components of a balanced diet, including how to select nutrient-rich foods and portion control.

The program will also highlight the significance of engaging in physical activity consistently, recommending at least three to four days of exercise each week. Additionally, Lewis said they'll discuss the importance of understanding food labels, equipping attendees with the skills to make informed dietary choices.

Lastly, the session will address practical ways to modify lifestyle habits that contribute to overall well-being and weight management, fostering a holistic approach to health.

Lewis said those interested can register by calling the Department of Recreation, Parks & Community Health at 708-748-2005 by Jan. 17.
