As the holiday season approaches, the Park Forest Police Department has partnered with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) to launch a safety initiative called “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Drive High, Get a DUI.” This enforcement campaign aims to ensure that holiday celebrations do not lead to tragic incidents on the roadways.
Running from now until Jan. 2, this campaign mobilizes law enforcement agencies throughout Illinois, including the Park Forest Police Department, to adopt a stringent zero-tolerance policy for impaired driving. The overarching objective is to enhance road safety and reduce the risks associated with drinking and driving or operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs.
Deputy Chief Kristopher Vallow emphasized the importance of safety this season, stating, “This season, let’s make safety our shared priority. If you plan to drink alcohol or use any impairing substances, it’s absolutely vital to arrange for a sober ride home. Driving while impaired isn’t just a dangerous choice – it’s one that is completely unacceptable. Our officers will be out in full force, and there will be no room for excuses.”
The Park Forest Police Department strongly encourages community members to take proactive steps to prevent impaired driving. Here are some detailed actions that can be taken:
1. **Plan ahead:** Before heading out for festivities, make arrangements for a sober driver. Consider using public transportation options, which are often more accessible during holiday seasons, or utilize ride-sharing services to ensure a safe journey home.
2. **Report dangerous drivers:** If you encounter a driver who appears to be impaired, do not hesitate to pull over safely and contact the Park Forest Police Department immediately. Providing the location and a description of the vehicle can help prevent potential accidents.
3. **Be a hero:** If you notice a friend or loved one intending to drive after consuming alcohol or drugs, take a proactive stance. Safeguard their well-being by taking their keys and offering assistance in securing a safe ride home, whether it be through a designated driver or alternative transportation.
4. **Buckle up:** Seat belts remain the most effective means of protecting yourself and your passengers from serious injury or fatality during accidents, including those caused by impaired drivers. Always buckle up, no matter how short the trip may seem.
Vallow said this holiday season, he'd like for residents to create memorable moments for all the right reasons. At the same time, he mentioned it's important for people to celebrate responsibly.
