Cook County issues disaster proclamation following storms in July

Village of Park Forest - Administration News Posted on August 13, 2024

After severe storms in July, the Village of Park Forest and other municipalities in Cook County will have increased access to state resources and emergency personnel.

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle issued a disaster proclamation earlier this week on Monday for parts of Cook County following severe storms on July 14 and 15.

The National Weather Service confirmed three tornadoes in Cook County on July 14 and 13 tornadoes on July 15, causing significant damage.

"Cook County residents sustained significant damage due to severe storms that struck our community on July 14 and 15," said Preckwinkle in a press release. "My administration continues to coordinate recovery efforts with impacted municipalities and will ensure we pursue all possible opportunities for additional assistance. This proclamation is another step to assist residents in the recovery from the storms' impacts."

Later this week, the Cook County Department of Emergency Management and Regional Security (EMRS) will assess damage in affected areas in partnership with state and federal agencies to further document the storms' impact and ensure that those affected have access to appropriate resources.

Following the severe storms in Park Forest, Village officials assisted residents by removing damaged trees that they brought to the curb. Many residents were left without power for a couple of days. It's worth noting that there were no confirmed tornadoes in Park Forest, but the village was under a tornado warning when the severe weather outbreak occurred on July 15.
