[ARCHIVED] Park Forest urges residents to help prevent street flooding by keeping storm drains clear

Park Forest urges residents to help prevent street flooding by keeping storm drains clear

As spring approaches and rain becomes more frequent, the Village of Park Forest Public Works Department urges residents to help prevent street flooding by actively clearing debris from nearby storm drains.

Clogged drains often cause local street flooding. Leaves, litter, and other debris can block water flow, which lets rain pool on roads and creates hazards for drivers and pedestrians. Sometimes, standing water also affects nearby property.

Stormwater is not treated like sink or toilet water. It flows from storm drains directly into local waterways and detention ponds. Trash, chemicals, and organic debris can pollute the environment. Keeping drains clear helps protect the ecosystem.

The Village manages over 4,000 storm drains. Public Works crews inspect and service them regularly, but they cannot clear every drain during heavy rain or rapid seasonal changes. Residents can help reduce flooding by assisting.

Officials remind residents not to rake leaves, grass clippings, or yard waste into the street. This can quickly clog storm drains and worsen flooding.

Residents who are able are strongly encouraged to routinely check the curb line near drains and promptly remove any debris before and after storms. Public Works officials say that by taking this simple step, you can make a real difference in preventing blockages and flooding. Also, be sure to collect and securely bag debris so it does not return to the street. Your action helps protect both neighbors and the environment.

Village officials remind residents that their safety is important—when helping out, avoid entering the roadway, use rakes or brooms rather than your hands, and never try to lift heavy drain grates or reach inside. If you notice a major clog or blocked catch basin, take action by reporting it to the Public Works Department at 708-503-7702.
