ComEd offers bill relief as Park Forest braces for higher summer energy costs

As temperatures rise across the Chicago area, residents in Park Forest are preparing for higher electricity bills this summer. To help alleviate the financial burden, ComEd has announced a $10 million Customer Relief Fund aimed at supporting low- and moderate-income customers who are experiencing increased utility costs.

Starting July 7, eligible households can apply for one-time grants of up to $500 through ComEd’s website. Nonprofit organizations that serve vulnerable populations may also apply for grants of $1,000. The utility company estimates that the average customer will see an increase 10 to 15 percent increase in their bills due to higher wholesale electricity costs.

Local officials in Park Forest are working to ensure residents are aware of available aid and have the knowledge to reduce their energy usage. Carrie Malfeo, the Village’s sustainability coordinator, stated that small changes around the home can lead to significant savings during extreme heat.

“With heat waves pushing our air conditioners into overdrive, simple measures can add up,” Malfeo said. “Set your thermostat to 78 degrees when you’re home and 82 degrees when you’re away. Use ceiling fans to stay comfortable while using less energy.”

Malfeo also mentioned that sealing gaps around windows and doors, switching to LED light bulbs, and using large appliances during off-peak hours are effective ways to lower electricity consumption.

The Customer Relief Fund is designed to serve as a bridge between the end of the state's Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program and the start of ComEd's forthcoming Low-Income Discount program, which begins in January 2026.

“Our goal is to offer immediate relief while empowering residents through education on sustainability,” Malfeo said. “We want Park Forest families not just to survive this summer, but to thrive for years to come.”

While many families are facing the financial strain of higher energy bills, Malfeo stressed the importance of planning for the future. She noted that Park Forest is exploring long-term strategies, such as expanding access to smart thermostats, improving home insulation, and encouraging participation in community solar initiatives.
