Taking care of your mental health is essential daily, but it's in the spotlight this month.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and the Village of Park Forest is hosting the Awakening Wellness Fest on Saturday, May 25., from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. on the Village Green.

Assistant Director of Recreation, Parks & Community Health Margaret Lewis said the goal is to unite the community and highlight ways to care for one's mental health.

"We want residents to come out and let go of the stresses of the world," Lewis said. "At the Awakening Wellness Fest, we will do some yoga, art therapy, and meditation."

Lewis added that the Awakening Wellness Fest will feature raffles and informational flyers. Additionally, a doctor will explain why learning coping skills and seeking resources is important to achieving a healthy mental wellness balance. She said that in addition to yoga—be sure to bring your mat—there will be a sound bath session, which is a sound frequency that creates sensations in the body to release stress and bring calm.

"People may not know what steps they can take to improve their mental health," Lewis said. "But you can do things like exercise or take a break and get some rest. Also, don't be afraid to talk to someone."

Lewis said taking care of your mental health is crucial because it's a vital part of your life and impacts your thoughts, behaviors, and emotions. Being emotionally healthy can promote productivity and effectiveness in work, school, or caregiving. She added that mental health is just as important, if not more important, than physical health.

"I'm calling on the community to come out later this month, on May 25., to meet new people and take care of their mental health," Lewis said. Mental health is essential to living a balanced life, and I want people to learn that while attending the fest."
